What to take with you to enjoy motorcycle camping

The perfect camping experience where you find a beautiful spot somewhere in the wilderness, pitch your tent, grab your chair and cook a delicious meal while enjoying the nature is much easier with the right equipment. Imagine the exact same spot when your stove is not working and you get completely soaked from the rain at night while you are lying in your sleeping bag shivering. It often doesn’t have to be the most expensive stuff, but it’s important that it fits for your style of travelling.

Tent

Our tent is really important for us during our travels. We enjoy the freedom of being able to sleep wherever we like. We bought our tent in 2014 before we started our first trip together to Morocco. Even though we are just two travellers, we took a 4 person tent. It is much more comfortable and there is enough space to put all your belongings inside.

When camping, inside we keep: motorcycle gear, helmets, boots, gloves, a small backpack with water and food, smartphones, etc. At the top inside we have mounted a carabiner, that always stays inside. At night before going to sleep we can fix one of our headlamps inside the tent. That way the whole tent is illuminated inside.

Even after over a hundred nights outside some of them under extreme conditions it is still in a very good shape. The only important thing is to let it fully dry, if you plan to pack it away for more than a few days. Otherwise it will get mouldy. The olive colour is perfect for staying hidden, whenever we want to avoid unwanted attention.

It’s a freestanding tent that you can move around without using tent pegs to fix it on the ground. That is very convenient when sleeping on a hard underground, where you cannot put the tent pegs into the ground. Sometimes you do not have a lot of choice when looking for a camping spot at night. In the past we even put up our tent on tarmac, on a parking lot or on a terrace.

We always remained dry even during hard rain. Having a tiny lock with us does not really protect the tent, but gives a tiny bit of added security, if we leave something inside. We just lock together the two zipper sliders of the main entrance. Someone who wants to get inside needs to cut it open or apply force and we know that someone was inside. As we do a lot of wild camping for just one night, we usually don’t leave our camping spot and more security is not necessary.

The only thing we bought additionally, are stronger camping pegs. We put them into the ground by hand or foot for many years. However, in 2018 in Iran we bought a hammer. If you have enough space to take one with you, do it! It is much more comfortable.
