How do you travel?

We pack the motorcycle and ride through different countries. We mostly sleep in our sleeping bags in the tent we have with us. Every now and then we look for a guesthouse or hostel to take a shower, wash our clothes and feel human again. On the motorbike we have everything we need to live for many months. You find cooking stuff, food, tools, camera equipment and laptop, toiletries, medicine, clothes, chairs and all that is necessary to have a good time on the road.

Who is this biker girl?

Claudia

Claudia was born in a small town in Austria and has been living in the beautiful city of Vienna for ten years now. She loves dancing and practicing yoga.

As a child she read many books and travelling stories that made her want to experience her own adventure. On language holidays as a teenager she got in touch with interesting people from other countries and enjoyed seeing many beautiful places. After meeting Peter, they wanted to explore the world together on two wheels. As a pharmacist she knows the cure for many diseases and what is important to stay fit while travelling.

Who is the rider?

Peter

Peter grew up in the picturesque south of Austria, next to Italy and Slovenia. In his free time he likes to go snowboarding in the mountains. As long as he can think he wanted to discover the world and its mysterious places. After finishing his studies of automation technology, now it is the right time to make this dream come true.

Riding on a motorbike is the perfect means of transportation for him, because you are free to go everywhere and discover countries independently. Feeling the weather and the rain as well as enjoying sunshine are part of the adventure.

What bike do you ride? Why?

Our first Suzuki V-Strom
The current V-Strom
We travel with a Suzuki V-Strom. Our own bike is a 2007 V-Strom DL1000. For the trip to Singapore Suzuki sponsored a new 2018 V-Strom 1000 ABS. The most important accessory parts where paniers by Givi and a specially produced suspension by Wilbers. We started travelling with the V-Strom because of the great quality of Suzuki engines and because you get a lot of motorbike for your money. While riding it the last few years we really fell in love with the bike, that brought us to so many great places in the world.

How did it all start?

Amalfi coast in Italy 2010

In 2010 Peter spontaneously started a motorbike trip towards Italy with a friend. Just with a tent and very light luggage they travelled four weeks towards Sicily, Greece, Albania, Croatia and back to Austria. He was so excited about the freedom of travelling this way, that he decided that it won’t be the last. Year after year he travelled in different countries by motorbike, most of them with his girlfriend Claudia, who shares his passion.

The latest big adventure of the team RoadsUp brought us along the way of the legendary Silk Road starting at the Balkan through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia and Bulgaria. We continued to Turkey with its colorful balloons in Cappadocia and to the beautiful beaches of the Black Sea. Georgia with its mountainous roads, Armenia with the famous Sevan Lake and Azerbaijan with the cultural city of Baku on the Caspian Sea are worth a visit. We got to know the old culture of Iran, the hot desert of Turkmenistan and the cities of the old Silk Road in Uzbekistan. While riding on the famous Pamir highway in Tajikistan we did a short detour to Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan with its beautiful lakes and Kazakhstan with the interesting city Almaty were on the way to China, where we visited the old Silk Road caravan city of Kashgar. Pakistan with its spectacular scenery along the Karakorum highway is the country to cross towards colorful India. While riding on the mountain roads in Nepal a motorbiker`s dream came true. In Bhutan we could experience, why the people call their country the happiest place on earth. As in Bangladesh there was election time, we entered this fascinating Muslim country just for a very short time before meeting up with other travelers to cross Myanmar together. Thailand was the first country that felt like holiday. Among many other tourists we did trips to see rice fields in Laos and Hanoi in Vietnam. Cambodia offered unique culture at the Angkor Wat temples and lonely beaches on the southern islands. Malaysia surprised us with its professional infrastructure before we reached our goal Singapore. We shipped the motorcycle from Malaysia to Germany and rode back to Austria.

Why on a motorcycle?

Riding in the jungle of Cambodia

A motorbike is the greatest way to really experience a country and its people. You feel the country. You sweat in the heat and your skin senses the icy cold wind on a freezing day. You notice every raindrop and enjoy the sunrise after a cloudy night. On a motorbike you don’t just visit places, but you immerse into the culture of a country. Many magnificent impressions you get on the way, far away from tourist attractions or big cities.

Invited in Uzbekistan

People are curious about where you come from and want to show you their home country. Countless times you get invited. You see how people live, how they cook, eat and sleep. You learn what they do for a living and how they raise their children. You exchange stories drinking a cup of tea and learn about their believes, religion, motivations in life and how they see the world.

Favourite Countries
Turkey
– offers everything you wish: very friendly people, great roads, fascinating culture, beaches, astonishing nature, modern civilisation and you get all you need.

Iran – The incomparable hospitality of the Iranians fascinated us as well as ancient cities and spice markets.

Cambodia – picturesque countryside, lonely beaches, and amazing culture in Angkor Wat

Countries that left the biggest impression
Afghanistan
– the country with the greatest difference to our home. Especially the invitation to spend the night at an Afghan family was a unique experience we will never forget.

Turkmenistan – riding through sand in the desert heat of up to 50°C was exhausting but worth the effort, when we arrived at the Door to Hell.

India –  overwhelming traffic and huge crowds eager to take selfies with us. Nevertheless we had a great time in this beautiful, colorful part of the world.

Biggest problem

Our rim was bent three times in Tajikistan, Afghanistan and India. Initially we used tubeless tires. First some guys in small motorcycle servicing shops hammered them back into position. Later we put a tube inside and got some spare tubes. We learned, what we knew before: spoked rims and tubes are the way to go for long distance motorcycle trips with a certain amout of offroad.
